Oh… What To Wear? Quick Tips for Family Portraits

August 2, 2017

When planning your family portrait session, one of the first things that comes to mind is the all-important question: “what are we going to wear?” You want your family portraits to capture the unique essence and personality of YOUR family, and what you wear is an important part of that! Choosing what to wear should be fun, and not stressful.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare:

Start with one favorite outfit. When doing a session with my own family, I choose something feel good in for myself, or something I love for my daughter, then pull colors from there to put on the boys- they are easier to coordinate!

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and solids. It is easy to feel like everything has to be “matchy matchy”, but that is not the case. Feel free to mix patterns and solids, but be sure that the patterns are consistent with the overall color scheme

Stay away from all black and pure whites. Keeping it classic is important, but color photographs best. It can be helpful to think about the setting in which your portraits will take place, and what colors you already love to wear.

Bring your childrens favorite outfit, costume, or play itemThis can be done at the end of the regular session, and is a fun way to capture their unique personality and the stage that they are in.

Accessories are your friends- but keep it simple! Feel free to wear some fun accessories that reflect your style, but it’s important not to overdo it. Remember, less is more!

Don’t arrive with chipped fingernails. Make sure you have a fresh coat of nail polish that coordinates with your outfits or clean nails.

Wear makeup even if you normally don’t. Even if it is a tinted moisturizer or a little mascara and lip color it will help to accent and pop your beautiful features on camera.

Bring a brush, hairspray and makeup for touchups. Whether it’s a windy day or Evin has you running around for some fun photos, you may need to tame the mane! It’s always best to have them on hand even if you don’t end up needing them.

Don’t over schedule your day. Photo session day can be stressful enough, so be sure you aren’t coming straight from a sporting event or a doctors appointment where your kids have just gotten shots.
